Where to get it, practically. Your GP can put a mental health treatment plan in place, which provides Medicare-subsidised sessions with a registered psychologist. That is the single most useful thing to know, because cost is the main reason people do not go. Psychologists are AHPRA-registered and you can check any of them on the public register. Many now offer telehealth, which removes the travel problem.
What the evidence supports for common conditions: cognitive behavioural therapy for anxiety disorders and depression, trauma-focused therapies for post-traumatic stress, and CBT for insomnia. Those outperform anything a complementary clinic can offer, and it would be wrong of us to imply otherwise.
If you are in crisis: Lifeline 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency. Beyond Blue is 1300 22 4636. For eating disorders, the Butterfly National Helpline is 1800 33 4673. For alcohol and other drugs, 1800 250 015.
What we do offer, alongside that care and never instead of it: treatment for the physical side — held tension, shallow breathing, poor sleep, the body of a hard year. That is genuine and it is limited, and we describe it that way. We are in Freshwater, ten streets from Balgowlah and about twenty from Manly, and we will give you names of psychologists nearby if you ask.
