Moxibustion can use several forms of mugwort and several ways of applying heat. Here is what to ask so the form chosen suits you.
A photograph of a glowing moxa stick is often the only image people have of moxibustion. In practice, mugwort can be prepared in several forms and heat can be delivered in more than one way. Knowing this before a session at the Lane Cove clinic helps you ask the right questions.
Moxibustion may involve:
Each form produces heat and smoke differently, which affects comfort and suitability. One picture of one product says little about the way your own appointment would be conducted.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can explain which form she is considering for you and the reasoning behind it. You might ask:
Share any earlier trouble with smoke or warmth, wherever it occurred, such as around a campfire, incense or a heater. Asthma, allergies, skin sensitivity and reduced feeling in the skin all matter.
The important question is whether a particular application fits your body and preferences, not which product looks most traditional or has the strongest aroma. Before heat is applied, agree on how you will signal discomfort and what aftercare to follow. Instructions you are given should be tailored to you; an online routine or a friend's experience is not a reliable guide.
If smoke is a concern, ask about ventilation or a low-smoke option. You can also request breaks during the session.
North Shore patients curious about the variety of moxa can ask to see the options at the Lane Cove clinic, and Christine will explain which, if any, fits their situation.
