Herbal pastes are not one-size-fits-all tonics

8:23 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Herbal pastes are often sold as gentle self-care for anyone. Suitability still depends on the person and the ingredients, which makes it a genuine treatment decision.

Gentle marketing, real decisions

Herbal pastes are frequently described as a soothing, nourishing way to look after yourself through the cooler months. The packaging may feel comforting and the product may be familiar from childhood. Even so, a seasonal tonic is still a treatment decision, and whether it suits you depends on your health and what it contains.

Starting the conversation

If you are curious about a paste, discuss it with Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, at the Freshwater clinic. It helps to explain what sparked your interest, whether that is a recommendation from family, an advertisement or a particular concern. Also share every other product you use, including prescription medicines, vitamins, protein powders and herbal teas.

Questions worth asking

  • What would make a paste unsuitable for me?
  • Are there ingredients I should avoid because of allergies, diabetes or pregnancy?
  • How will we look at whether it is doing what we hoped?
  • What should I do if I feel unwell after starting it?
  • How long should one jar last at the recommended dose?

Hold off on stocking up

Bulk deals can be tempting, especially around festivals or seasonal sales. Before buying a large supply, make sure you know why it has been suggested and exactly how to take it. A smaller quantity leaves room to stop or change course without waste.

Keeping track once you begin

Once you begin, a sticky note on the lid with the dose and your review date can be surprisingly handy. Changes to your regular medicines, or any unexpected reaction, are reasons to check in with Christine before the next spoonful.

Involving your other health professionals

If you see a GP, pharmacist or specialist regularly, mention that you are considering a herbal paste. They can help check for interactions and ensure everyone involved in your care has the same information.

A considered first step

Bringing the jar, or a clear photo of its ingredient list, to your Freshwater appointment allows the label to be read together and makes it easier to reach a well-informed decision about whether it suits you.
