Exploring BPD Traits You Recognise Without Labelling Yourself

7:39 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Spotting yourself in a piece about borderline personality disorder can be unsettling. Here is how to explore them without labelling yourself.

Reading an article about borderline personality disorder and finding yourself nodding along can stir up a lot of questions. You may feel relief at seeing your experiences described, worry about what it means, or both. If psychotherapy at the Freshwater clinic is on your mind, it is worth slowing down before drawing conclusions.

Recognition is not diagnosis

Experiences such as intense emotions, difficulties in relationships or a strong fear of rejection are common to many people and can have a range of explanations. Life events, stress, other mental health conditions and personality all play a part. A checklist in an article cannot tell you which explanation fits, and only a proper assessment by a qualified professional can consider a diagnosis.

Turning recognition into something useful

If the article resonates, try writing down:

  • a few concrete examples of situations that felt hard
  • how you reacted and how long the feelings lasted
  • how these experiences affect work, relationships or daily life

These notes give you something specific to discuss rather than a general sense that the description fits.

Talking it through

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is also a qualified psychotherapist. You can go through your notes with Christine and ask if a specialist mental health review, for example through your GP or a psychiatrist, would be useful. Psychotherapy may be one part of support, but it is not a replacement for specialist assessment when that is needed.

Aiming for understanding

The goal is appropriate support and a clearer understanding, not deciding who you are from a list of traits or expecting a single name to account for everything you face. Ask when the work together would be looked at again and what other services might help.

If you are struggling right now

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or feel unsafe, contact emergency services, a crisis line or your GP straight away.

For Northern Beaches readers unsettled by something they have read, a careful conversation at the Freshwater clinic can help sort out next steps, including whether a referral should come first.
