Keeping Your Wider Life in View in Mental Health Care

8:16 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A diagnosis can be a useful guide, but it never tells the whole story. Good mental health care keeps your wider life and personal priorities in view.

A label is only part of the picture

Receiving a mental health diagnosis can bring relief, confusion or a mixture of both. It may help explain experiences and point towards appropriate treatment. What it cannot do is describe everything about a person: their relationships, work, interests, culture and hopes. Support tends to feel more relevant when it connects with what someone actually wants to regain or keep going in their life.

Psychotherapy at the Lane Cove clinic

Alongside acupuncture, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is qualified in psychotherapy and sees people for psychological treatment at the Lane Cove clinic. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, sessions can begin with the parts of daily life that feel squeezed and the things you would most like to protect.

Areas you might mention

  • work, study or volunteering;
  • relationships with family, friends or a partner;
  • physical health, sleep and activity;
  • hobbies, faith or community connections;
  • personal goals that feel out of reach at the moment.

Coordinating with other care

Many people see more than one health professional. It is reasonable to ask how often you and Christine will look back over the work, and at what point linking in with your GP, psychiatrist or another service might be worthwhile. With your consent, sharing relevant information can help everyone work from the same understanding.

Holding difficulties and strengths together

You are more than a list of symptoms. A useful plan acknowledges what is hard while also recognising your strengths, values and the things you want to protect. Your goals might be about understanding a pattern, rebuilding a routine or simply getting through a demanding season. Naming them early, and revisiting them, keeps the work tied to your life rather than to a label. If needs shift between appointments, ask what extra support can be arranged.

Preparing in your own way

Some people find it helpful to bring a short note listing two or three things that matter to them outside of their health concerns. Sharing that at Lane Cove can make the first conversation feel more personal and less like filling in a checklist.
